Wisconsin Youth Harmony Festival

We invite you to join singers just like you from across Wisconsin to enjoy a day of celebrating harmony and virtual fellowship.  All high school quartets, in the barbershop and treble (women’s and mixed) barbershop categories are welcome to participate.

Students will have the opportunity to compete virtually in a contest to determine the best high school barbershop and treble quartet in the state.

The following is the TIMELINE for this Virtual Event:

March 16 > Quartet Registration officially opens.

April 30 > DEADLINE for Quartet Registration!

May 1 – 6 > Quartet videos will be submitted to judges for adjudication.

May 22 > The Virtual WYHF Show is premiered on the BHS YouTube Channel and contest winners are announced. When the exact time is confirmed, and link to that Premiere is available, it will be posted HERE (link coming soon).

May 24-28 > Trophies/Checks to winning quartets/schools will be delivered.

Since judging will need to take place prior to the premiere of the Virtual WYHF, the video recording of your performance is the key component in your registration!

Video Recording Guidelines:

    • Record your group singing ONE SONG in the barbershop style.
    • Record your performance in a well-lit space, avoiding echo chambers like stairwells that will distort your sound. A music room or other classroom works well.
    • Do not use amplified sound and speakers.
    • Do not modify the audio quality of your recording in any way! Video and/or audio that demonstrate any pre- or post-production will be automatically disqualified.
    • You should record your quartet singing from a straight-on perspective using a stationary camera. We want to be able to see your whole quartet from head to toe.
    • Record with the best video quality you have available. Most cell phones will perform adequately, if set to 1080p.
    • Once you have recorded your video, upload it to an UNLISTED (not public or private!) YouTube link.
    • REGISTER your quartet, including your YouTube link.

Although it doesn’t totally apply, consider the following video produced by the Barbershop Harmony Society in recording your video: Next Generation Barbershop instructional video – VARSITY – YouTube

The Schmitt Brothers Traveling Trophy goes to the school of the 1st Place quartets in each category. (It is returned the following year to be exchanged for a version of the original trophy to remain permanently at the school.) Trophies and plaques will be delivered to the top three barbershop and treble quartets, along with cash prizes of $300, $200, and $100 their schools during the week of May 24-28 (See a listing of past winners)

All participants receive a commemorative certificate of participation.

Stay tuned to the Instructors/Judges tab on this website, as it is not yet clear what the method and extent to which evaluations will be available from the judges to help quartets improve future performance.

We regret that the usual WYHF educational component will not be offered in 2021, nor will we be able to sing any barbershop tags! We look forward to those important WYHF features returning in 2022!!
